What it is:
Montgomery’s Inn in Etobicoke, Ontario will play host to 5 new Canadian short plays, each one of them written, produced, rehearsed exclusively for this event.   Each play will be inspired by one of Shakespeare’s Sonnets.

How it will work:
Five writers will arrive at the Inn FOURTEEN days before the event.  At that time they will be given a writers kit that will give them all the “rules” for their new script.

The kit will contain: the sonnet whose themes and images will inspire the play, a room assignment in the Inn where the play is to take place along with a little bit of local history about the Inn which will also be incorporated into the script.

At this point the writers will have FOURTEEN days to take a FOURTEEN line sonnet and transform it into a FOURTEEN minute play.  At the end of FOURTEEN days the writers will then submit their scripts for copying and distribution to the performers and directors who arrive at Montgomery’s Inn at 9am on May 28.  Over the course of the day they rehearse, memorize and edit the pieces until 6:00pm.  Guests arrive soon thereafter for a reception and to get their play schedule for the evening.  Each piece is then performed 5 times with audience members going from room to room “promenade style”. After the plays the audience gathers again in the reception area to meet the artists, and enjoy some “cakes and ale”.  Everything is wrapped up by 10pm.

This event sells out every year, so book early.
